THE DAY IS FINALLY HERE!

A year ago a group of young business women from the University of Alberta had the idea of hosting a conference focused on Empowered Women. Today, January 24, 2013, the University of Alberta’s Network of Empowered Women is happy to host their inaugural conference!

UPDATED Conference Details!

NEW’s iconic event highlights an annual national conference to be held in early 2013. This year’s conference will be NEW’s first annual conference with the purpose of providing delegates with the opportunity to form networks with fellow business students across Canada, form networks and mentorships with sponsors and alumni, and listen to established female business leaders.

Our conference is a four day event held from January 24-27, 2013 at the Chateau Lake Louise which is situated in the midst of the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. This conference will consist of a range of inspiring keynote speakers, networking opportunties, exciting day and evening events, an optional Dragon’s Den style competition and more!

*Delegate fee includes  all food, accommodation expenses and round trip transportation to and from Edmonton.

Another Speaker Announced – Ford’s Dianne Craig

NEW has the pleasure of announcing our second confirmed speaker for our 2013 conference! Dianne Craig, President and CEO of Ford Motor Canada, will be joining the conference and speaking with delegates! See below for more information about Dianne.

Dianne Craig is president and CEO of Ford Motor Company Canada, Limited, appointed to the position in November 2011. She leads Ford of Canada’s operations across the country, including a national headquarters, three regional offices, two branch offices, three vehicle assembly and engine manufacturing plants and two parts distribution centres.

Ford employs approximately 6,000 people in Canada, while an additional 18,000 people are employed in the more than 400 Ford and Ford-Lincoln dealerships across the country. “My experience with Ford most recently has been in markets with very unique buyer

preferences,” said Craig. “I want to take that learned experience, coupled with the Canadian dealer body support, and apply it to the equally unique Canadian market for future success and growth.”

Craig was the general manger for the Southeast market area, a position she assumed in March 2009. In this role, Craig was responsible for all marketing, sales and service operations for 520 Ford and Ford-Lincoln dealers in the Southeast United States (N.C., S.C., GA, Ala. and Fla.). Craig joined the company in 1986 in an entry level field position and has held a variety of sales and marketing positions in Dearborn including advertising, product marketing, contests and incentives and field operations. She has extensive field experience including her assignment as the regional sales manager in the Pittsburgh Regional Sales Office in addition to other field assignments in the Detroit, Memphis and Atlanta regional offices.

Between 2005 and 2009, Craig was responsible for Ford and Lincoln Mercury U.S. dealer relations. In this capacity, she led the National Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealer Council process and other related dealer activities including National Dealer Meetings. “I’ve had so many wonderful experiences at Ford that have allowed me to grow professionally and learn the automotive business and as a result – afforded me the opportunity to contribute and make a difference,” said Craig. “Now to be been given the opportunity to serve the Ford of Canada team and our dealers as president and CEO is an incredible honour and responsibility.” From a personal point of view, Craig is most proud of her family. She has been married for 16 years and has a 12 year-old daughter.

“My daughter is a constant reminder of how precious life is and she gives me a strong purpose— to be the best I can be everyday,” said Craig. “I strive to be a great role model for her.” Craig was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on February 18, 1964. She graduated from the State University of New York and holds an MBA from Ohio State. Outside of work she loves to garden, work out and spend time with her family. Craig also enjoys skiing and occasionally golfing. “I truly believe there is something very special about working at Ford – and it all comes down to the people,” said Craig. “Ford employees and our dealers have incredible emotional resilience and pride – that keeps me pumped up.”

 

CMA’s Kira Mitchelmore

The NEW team has confirmed the attendance of CMA’s Kira Mitchelmore at our 2013 Conference! See below for more information about Kira.

Kara Mitchelmore, MBA, FCMA
President and CEO, CMA Alberta

Kara Mitchelmore has led CMA Alberta since November 2010 but established her management expertise in other roles, including controller, strategic consultant, post-secondary instructor and program developer. Before assuming her current position, Kara was vice president of accreditation at CMA Alberta and acting president and CEO.

CMA Alberta is an integral partner of CMA Canada and is responsible for the training, accreditation and continuing professional development of more than 7,400 CMAs in Alberta.

Kara earned her CMA designation in Nova Scotia in 1999 and moved to Alberta to further realize her career aspirations. In 2003, she was nationally recognized by CMA Canada for successfully leading one of Canada’s top eyewear companies.

Kara is passionate about the CMA designation and displays it to all who might pass her on the road – her license plate reads: “CMA 4 Ever”.

Kara was awarded her MBA in 2009 and is currently pursuing a doctorate in business administration.

Chancellor’s Cup Golf Tournament

The University of Alberta’s Chancellor’s Cup Golf Tournament was held earlier this summer at the Glendale Golf & Country Club on June 25th, 2012.

The Chancellor’s Cup raises community awareness of the University of Alberta’s commitment to excellence and vast accomplishments in the areas of learning, discovery and citizenship. In addition, the tournament provides golfers with a unique opportunity to learn about each Faculty at the University. Each tee box represented a different Faculty at the University, by showcasing a display about the Faculty with professors and students.

This year, the Faculty of Business set up a display on Hole #9 and took the time to present two Alberta School of Business studentclubs, Network of Empowered Women was honour to be picked to represent the faculty as one of the clubs. NEW was given the spotlight in recognition of our Annual National Conference in January 24-27, 2013.

NEW took on the opportunity to have an introduction to the Edmonton business community and everyone associated with the university. The display focused on opportunities of the conference for potential sponsorship and involvement by providing information packages and cards. Samples of the eco-friendly bug spray were given out to golfers who participated in the display. The display was well received by the golfers and the event as a great success for NEW!
