Aliya is currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, with a major in Accounting, and is a member of the Leadership Certificate Program. Her journey with the Network of Empowered Women began in 2015, when she attended the conference as a delegate, and after having such a remarkable and inspiring experience, she was motivated to help provide this opportunity to other students from across Canada. That intention resulted in her being an External Director for the 2016 conference, and has led her to having the privilege of being a Co-Chair of this year’s 5th Annual NEW 2017 Conference. A dancer since the age of four, Aliya has completed ballet training in St. Petersburg, Russia, and continues her passion for the art form through her involvement with the on-campus dance ensemble, MOD Contemporary Dance Movement. She also has a keenness for travel and adventure, which stems from her desire to learn about the world and to take on new experiences that challenge her comfort zone. She has included Peru, Australia, Russia and Thailand as some of the locations on her world map of places travelled, and also lived in Dallas, Texas last summer while completing an internship. She is extremely grateful and excited to be working with an incredible team this year to continue the legacy of NEW.
Maria wants to live in a world where every human being realizes their worth and takes charge of it. Maria wants to live in a world where everyone sees the interconnected nature of human beings and the importance of following one’s passions. Maria wants to live in a world where there aren’t other alternatives to empowering others & working together towards a brighter future. As a fourth-year Strategic Management and Organization student, she’s been spotlighted in Lazyfaire for her leadership in the Kids Help Phone Student Committee &, her efforts to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing. When she’s not busy with school work and extracurricular activities, you can find her exploring, practicing her photography and keeping herself engaged with personal challenges like 365 Days of Happiness or daily meditation.
In the future, Maria plans to be a serial entrepreneur, with a more purposeful and social agenda. Her life’s purpose, as she sees it, is to see the world, strange things and humankind’s work and accomplishments; to experience different cultures; to experience great passion; to unveil her hidden skills and talents; to be amazed and inspired; to amaze and inspire those around her; and to instigate positive, worldly change throughout the realm of education. Maria aligns with this purpose in all of her current and future endeavors.
